The Attacks

Islamic calendar date:  Jumada-al-Thani 23, 1422 or 6/23/22; al Qaeda militants call this the "Holy Tuesday" operation.

  • World Trade Center, NY:
    • 2,823 dead or missing; 7/13/02
    • Included in the figures are 343 firefighters, 23 police officers, 27 Port Authority police, and the victims from Flights 11 & 175; hijackers are excluded.
    • Also included in the figures are 494 foreigners from 83 different countries.
    • The two planes each carried 10,000 gallons of fuel, causing fires that burned at over 2000 degrees.
    • About 1,229 victims have been identified so far.  7/13/02
  • Pentagon:
  • Victim databases maintained by:
  • Out of 662 people who have filed a claim so far, the first nine awards were made from the government's victims' compensation fund.  Filing a claim requires applicants to give up their right to sue the airlines, although they can still sue alleged terrorists.  The average cash award is $1.36 million, which is the amount remaining after deducting "outside income sources like life insurance." 8/23/02
  • Business Casualties
  • World Trade Center Disaster Information by NY State Insurance Department
  • Planning for the attacks took two and a half years, according to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, one of the planners.  The first targets planned were nuclear facilities in the US, but it was ruled out for fear that it would get out of control - but it has not been ruled out for the future. June/02
  • Nine of the 19 hijackers were singled out by airport security measures but were still allowed to board the planes that later crashed.
  • The FBI is putting together a paper trail of credit card purchases made by the hijackers on days directly preceding the attacks.  27 credit cards have been traced to the 19 hijackers.  Purchases included at least four GPS devices and "flight deck simulator videos for Boeing 747, 757, 767 and Airbus A3-20 aircraft." 5/22/02
  • Arizona-based FBI agents advised their head office in Washington D.C. about suspicious Middle Eastern flight students in July 2001.  None of the "suspicious men" listed in the memo were connected to the 9/11 attacks, according to the FBI.  If that's the case, then there are a lot more suicide terrorist-pilots out there, trained for many years prior.  In 1996/7, a Phoenix businessman advised the FBI that "one or more Middle Eastern pilots were training or working in his state and appeared suspicious...very odd that the Algerian man was involved in aviation."  In 1995, Filipino intelligence revealed that "several Middle Eastern pilots were training at American flight schools and at least one had proposed hijacking a commercial jet and crashing it into federal buildings."
  • In a videotape recorded in December 2001, Osama bin Laden proudly tells of the psychological and financial damage the 9/11 attacks did to the US: besides the loss of buildings, "...the percentage of loss at the Wall Street was 16%.  ... Unprecedented in the history of the stock market since it opened more than 30 years ago.  The capital is $4 trillion.  To learn the amount of their loss, we multiply this number by 16 percent.  This should equal $640 billion.  This number is equal to the Sudanese budget for 640 years. This is what they lost because of God's support and generosity.  One blessed attack within one hour, and they lose all this.  The daily national income equals $20 billion.  In the first week after the attacks and after the psychological shock, ... people did not go to work.  So if we multiply $20 billion by 7 days, that is $140 billion.  ...airline companies are getting rid of their employees... more than 170,000 are out of jobs.  ..."May God accept the martyrs' actions and offer them the highest level of paradise." 4/17/02
  • Two of the hijackers, Khalid Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi, had been watched by the CIA for almost two years prior to 9/11.  The two had attended an al Qaeda meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the first of 2000.  Alhazmi flew from the meeting to Los Angeles in March 2000.  A third man at the meeting, Tawfiq Attash Khallad, was a suspect in the USS Cole in Yemen in October 2000, and at that time, Almihdhar and Alhazmi could have been placed on a "watch list", but were not.  In fact, Almihdhar reentered the US in July 2001.  The two weren't put on a watch list until three weeks before the attacks.
  • The National Security Agency intercepted two messages the day before the attacks, but did not translate them until the day after the attacks.  The messages: "The match begins tomorrow" and "Tomorrow is zero hour".
